I think I'm going back to just sending MIDI data with text.īut, I'm really frustrated with the lack of improvement in the Playback Configurations. At least here at VSL, we have soundsets provided, but for other libraries it is a mess. I can't make myself sit down and go through all the hassle of building soundsets, setting up the percussion, etc. It's still the same, I think it has been this way since Sibelius 5 (or 4?). I'm also having a good time with the new publishing options, I believe a lot of work I had to do in InDesign I will be able to do in Sibelius itself.īut, I'm really frustrated with the lack of improvement in the Playback Configurations. I think that was a smart move by Avid, making Sibelius close to MS Office, they linked its learning curve to the learning curve of an ubiquitous software. Specially in the house, my family members have experience with MS Office and this helped them work in Sibelius, including the youngsters. I was finally able to test Sibelius 7 and I have to agree with the above poster about the ribbon, I think it is an improvement. Just some friendly thoughts from the other side of the coin. Finale will never "anihilate" Sibelius simply because Sibelius has always had the 'composers in mind' approach the Ribbon reflects this. I'm simply saying that if you gave it time and learned it thouroughly that you might actually find it to save time. Trust me, I understand not wanting to adapt as much as anyone. Having to use more dialogue boxes (and other old-style GUI weaknesses) was what was distracting in the past. But it certainly isn't busier or more distracting. I get that you and many others might not like it now as it's new and different. It is an improvement and one that most users wanted. This new Ribbon for Sibelius is no different to me than office was. It is a far more intelligent approach than before. Now that she understands the Ribbon, she likes it. She only refused it because it wasn't the way she was used to. My mother hated the new office and I had to try to explain to her how things were easier to find because it shows you only what you need based on what your doing and things are labeled in a way that makes things easier to find in a natural way. The new "Ribbon" gui (MS developed originally for MS Office) is a large improvement. I hate the even more 'WIndows' look and menus of the current instalment with much "busier"/distracting GUI than before Even if the final product will be live-orchestral, or something mastered in Pro-Tools, at least the composition, orchestration, and most of the mixing can be achieved more efficiently in-house. That's why VSL should do this when they already have VE PRO. Someone might say that composers will always use more than one sound library. I think in the future some platform is liable to do it, it makes sense since - even in these execrable times, surprisingly most composers and film-composers and orchestrators still use notation to produce music, so someone who would cut through the programming, the networking, the setting(s) up, etc., would be very attractive to people who are musicians first, let alone the obvious time-saving. There was another post that I started in the past suggesting that VSL hire some superlative people and develop its own notation software, fully communicable with VI+VE PRO and of course Vienna Suite and MIR or they could come to an exclusive deal with an already established platform, etc. Will I upgrade? Not right now, I've always been a Sibelius man, but now I think I have to wait and see what Finale comes up with and their cross-over prices. But what can one expect from people who musically backed the introductory video with a Band-in-a-Box track for a professional and sophisticated notation package, instead of featuring a symphonic movement who do they think they're addressing? But I suppose with sounds like that, Band-in-a-Box was the better choice. AVID should have attempted a better integration of the available professional orchestral libraries with Sibelius, rather than just give the mixer a vertical rotation. I think they're going to get anihilated by those Finale 12 will probably feature. I hate the even more 'WIndows' look and menus of the current instalment with much "busier"/distracting GUI than before, but I agree with FredB regarding the CC lane, and was expecting many more intuitive sequencer features in this instalment (especially with the AVID aquisition), but the sounds are the biggest laugh. Yeah, what about that laughable Avid Orchestra?! I think the previous Sibelius Sounds are at least comparable, and the GPO4 for which I paid ~€85 and use with Sibelius 6 is certainly superior. The main benefit of Hybrid tracks is the ability to bounce instrument clips to audio in place and edit that audio while leaving the rest of the track as programmed notes. Unusually, Bitwig Studio offers four track types: Audio, Instrument, Effect (send/return tracks) and Hybrid, which can host audio and instrument clips at the same time. Once you're used to it, it always feels like you've got ready access to, well, everything. There's a ton of other options for hiding and revealing UI elements, too, making Bitwig's interface feel far more customisable than Live's. To the left is the Inspector window (which can also be folded into the Browser's tabbed space for small-monitor setups), offering access to a host of clip parameters, while the bottom panel, as with Live, hosts each track's device chain and clip editor - which can be expanded to fill the whole window - as well as a mixer. The metadata-based browser to the right provides access to instruments, effects and files, although it occasionally takes a long time to preview and load one-shot samples (we expect this issue will be resolved before too long, though, and indeed, Bitwig was very quick to fix the few other minor issues we came across). While - commendably - Ableton has always stuck to its guns in keeping Live clutter-free at the expense of making certain functions harder to get at than they perhaps could be, Bitwig is happy to let the interface get a little busier.Ĭonceptually, Bitwig Studio may centre on a dual-view setup like Live - the Arrange and Mix windows - but it breaks out of this paradigm by introducing various sub-windows, pop-ups and, of course, that Arrange view Clip Launcher. In fact, Bitwig's GUI in general feels slightly more user-friendly than Live's. Still, for one-monitor musos, Bitwig's Clip Launcher trumps Live's comparatively clunky two-window solution. Bitwig also supports up to three monitors, enabling even more expansive use of both views - although since Live finally introduced dual monitor support in version 9.1, this isn't quite the talking point it would have been a few months ago. While it might seem trivial at first glance, arguably Bitwig's biggest innovation is its ability to display the Mix view's Clip Launcher and Arranger side-by-side in one window, making it possible to lay out the arrangement of a track in a traditional, linear manner and experiment with clips at the same time, with the ability to drag clips between the two and keep a constant eye on what's going on in both views.įor those working on a single monitor, this is a fantastic workflow improvement over Live 9.1's two separate windows. Sure, the two have enough similarities, both obvious and subtle, that we could fill this entire review discussing them, but to do so would be to miss the point that Bitwig is packed with plenty of its own well-thought-out features. Crucially, however, Bitwig Studio doesn't just feel like it's aping Live for the sake of it. I love the Celestial Bronzing Veil, in Tropical Days, £36 applied with the Large Powder Blush Brush, £52 because it’s neither a really bronzed shade nor too pink. I’m also a big fan of Kevyn Aucoin make-up. It also gives me attitude and confidence. It takes me back to going to school at Parsons school of design in NY when we used to go out and party. I like looking natural and therefore love products that enhance that look like this Charlotte Tilbury Golden Goddess kit, £165 , but in the evening sometimes I’ll do a smokey eye or a vampy rock ‘n’ roll thing. The PageManager web site wasn't terribly helpful. I'm not sure if this is a Snow Leopard issue or not. The MP navigator program can perform OCR but apparently only with Omnipage because when I try it says that Omnipage is not installed. I tried again and the icon briefly appears in my bar and then disappears. I left the room as it was searching for this and when I returned the program had not opened. First time I tried to open it I got an error message saying it needed to find a component called Rosetta. 2: The availability of the utilities varies depending on your Brother machine. Presto® BizCard® 3: Note: 1: Available only for Brother machines with network connection. While trying to sort things out I found that the other scanning program that came with this set up - Omnipage for Optical Character Recognition is also not behaving normally. PaperPort or Presto® PageManager® must be installed on your PC for the Scan to OCR function to work from the Scan key or ControlCenter. This program is much more limited than page manager. Scanned some documents without any trouble. I found some other software that came with the scanner (MP Navigator 2.2) and it works fine. Occasionally it will sound like it is starting to scan the image and then abruptly says that PageManager has closed unexpectedly. I've tried reloading the software without success. I've left it like that for over 10min with no changes. The scanner starts doing something and then it says not to open the lid because it is calibrating. I can open the software and get to the point where it previews the image. I initially thought the problem was with the scanner. My printer/scanner is a Canon MP530 that I purchased from Apple with my MBP and the PageManager software came with it. This summer (probably prior to upgrading my OS) I used Presto PageManager 7.15.16 to scan some documents without difficulty. I have a MBP circa 2005 with Snow Leopard. |
